November 2024: Santa Monica

This month’s ride was a ride to remember!

For the first time, we decided to make this happen. Throughout the years at #LACriticalmass, we had cyclists who would inquire and ask to ride to the Santa Monica pier, but we never did. We were going based on our original lead driver, Brian Will. Brian led the Los Angeles Critical Mass ride for years before the pandemic. He was always set on not riding through Santa Monica. But, that was then, and this is now.

Lisa and Jojo had the pleasure in talking with Santa Monica PD back in October and November 2024 regarding riding through downtown Santa Monica and to the pier. Santa Monica PD was okay with it, and the decision was made. The original plan was to ride to Santa Monica in October, but Lisa made the last-minute decision not doing so because of all the huge events that were taking place that same last Friday of October. Los Angeles was labeling that Friday Carmagadden.

This month’s ride started at HQ on Western and the famous Wilshire Blvd. Our masses of cyclists started gathering earlier than 6:30 PM. We decided to let everyone know this month’s destination because of the miles we would put in. It was almost 28 miles. A total change from the previous month’s of 15-18 miles.

The mass of cyclists were excited. You could see on their faces that everyone knew that we were headed out to Santa Monica Pier. No one knew the exact route, but the destination was known.

Since 1995, Los Angeles Critical Mass has gathered at Western and Wilshire, meeting at 6:30 PM and starting the ride at 7:30 PM. Over the years, we’ve welcomed more than 1 million participants, with cyclists joining us from across the United States and around the globe.
